KARACHI – The Trade Marks (Amendment) Act 2023, which amends the Trade Marks Ordinance 2001, has brought significant changes to trademark practices in Pakistan.
These amendments not only reorganize administrative control but also introduce specialized tribunals, extend legal coverage to electronic communications, and offer global reach for trademark registrations. This landmark legislation aims to improve the Intellectual Property landscape in Pakistan, encouraging innovation and fortifying brand protection while enhancing the registration processes.
The Trade Mark Amendment Act 2023 introduces a chapter on “International Registration of Trade Marks” under the Madrid Protocol. Pakistan acceded to the Madrid Protocol on February 24, 2021, and ratified it on May 24, 2021.
