The Russian Federation Joins the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement

On May 11, 2023, the Government of the Russian Federation deposited its instrument of accession to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications ("Geneva Act").

With this accession, the Geneva Act now offers protection in 18 Contracting Parties covering up to 56 countries, while the Lisbon System covers up to 71 countries in total. 

This accession will allow Russian appellations of origin and geographical indications to be protected under the Geneva Act. These include “Gzhel ceramics" or “Zhostovo paintings” in the non-agricultural product category, as well as “Narzan" (mineral water) or “Tula Pryanik” (gingerbread) in the mineral water and food product categories, to name only a few. Read more
